1-Day Gorilla Trekking Rwanda

For travellers on a very tight schedule: a single, long day covering the drive, the trek and the return to Kigali.

The Day

How It Works

1Pre-Dawn Departure to Trek and ReturnKigali → Musanze → Kigali

Depart Kigali around 4am for the 2.5-hour drive to Musanze, arriving in time for the 7am briefing at Volcanoes National Park headquarters. Trek to your assigned gorilla family for your ranger-timed hour, then drive back to Kigali, typically arriving in the early evening.

We generally recommend at least one night in Musanze rather than this same-day option. It removes the pre-dawn drive and gives you a proper rest before the physical demands of trekking. This itinerary exists for travellers with a tightly constrained schedule who still want to make gorilla trekking work.

See our full gorilla trekking guide for what to expect on the trail, or consider our 3-day Rwanda tour, which includes an overnight and a more comfortable pace.

Common Questions

1-Day Trek FAQ

Is a 1-day gorilla trekking trip from Kigali realistic?

Yes, but it makes for a very long day: roughly a 2.5-hour drive each way plus the trek itself, requiring a pre-dawn departure from Kigali and a late return.

Is an overnight in Musanze better than a same-day trip?

We generally recommend at least one night in Musanze before trekking, since it removes the pre-dawn drive and lets you rest properly before the physical demands of the trek.
