Rwanda Gorilla Trekking

An hour face to face with a mountain gorilla family in Volcanoes National Park: the single most requested experience we plan.

The Experience

What Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda Involves

Rwanda gorilla trekking begins early, with a 7am briefing at Volcanoes National Park headquarters in Kinigi, near Musanze. Rangers assign each group of up to eight visitors to one of the park's habituated gorilla families based on fitness level and the family's location that morning. From there, you hike (anywhere from thirty minutes to four hours) through farmland, bamboo forest and increasingly dense vegetation, guided by trackers who've often been following that same family for years.

When you find them, you get a strict, ranger-timed hour in their company, usually at a distance of seven metres or less. Gorilla families in Volcanoes National Park are remarkably habituated to human presence, and it's common to watch juveniles play, silverbacks doze in dappled light, or a mother groom her infant a few metres from where you stand. Photography is welcome; flash is not.

We build every gorilla trek around your fitness level, photography interests and the rest of your itinerary: as a standalone 1-day gorilla trekking trip, combined with golden monkeys or Dian Fossey's grave on a 3-day gorilla trekking itinerary, or folded into a longer 7-day Rwanda tour.

Quick Answer

Gorilla trekking permits cost USD 1,500 per person and must be booked well in advance, often 3-6 months ahead in peak season (June–September, December–February). Treks happen daily year-round in Volcanoes National Park, last up to a full day including hiking, and reward you with exactly one hour observing a habituated mountain gorilla family at close range.

How We Handle Your Permit

We purchase your gorilla permit directly through the Rwanda Development Board, confirming your trekking date and group allocation in writing before you travel. Because permits are limited and frequently sell out in high season, we recommend confirming your trek at least three months ahead. See our full permit booking guide for the process in detail, and our gorilla trekking cost breakdown for a complete budget picture including lodging and transport.

Choosing Your Trekking Difficulty

On the morning briefing, rangers assign gorilla families partly based on your stated fitness level, so tell your guide honestly what you're comfortable with. Families range from those settled close to the park boundary (a manageable walk for most visitors) to groups higher on the volcano slopes that involve a demanding climb through cold, thin mountain air above 2,500 metres. Porters, hired locally for a modest fee, are available to carry your bag and offer a steadying hand on steep sections; hiring one also puts income directly into the local community.

Beyond the Gorillas

Most visitors extend their stay in the Musanze area to include golden monkey trekking in the same park's bamboo zone, a visit to the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund site, or a hike up Mount Bisoke's crater lake. We regularly combine gorilla trekking with time in Lake Kivu or Akagera National Park to round out a complete Rwanda itinerary.

Gorilla Trekking FAQ

How much does gorilla trekking cost in Rwanda?
