Golden Monkey Trekking
A shorter, lighter trek through Volcanoes National Park's bamboo forest among one of Africa's most photogenic, endangered primates.
The Experience
Rwanda's Other Primate Trek
Golden monkeys are endemic to the Virunga and Nyungwe mountain ranges of Rwanda, Uganda and the DRC, and are officially classified as endangered, making Volcanoes National Park's bamboo forest one of the very few places on earth to see them. Troops here can number over 60 individuals, and unlike the calmer mountain gorillas, golden monkeys are restless, fast-moving and entertaining to watch as they leap through bamboo stands foraging for shoots.
Treks are shorter and less physically demanding than gorilla trekking, typically an hour or two of walking through gentler terrain, making golden monkey trekking a popular add-on for travellers who want a second primate encounter without another punishing climb. Permits are also considerably less expensive than gorilla permits, at USD 100 per person.
Golden monkey trekking is based from the same Kinigi park headquarters as gorilla trekking. See our full gorilla trekking guide for logistics that apply to both, and our Musanze guide for where to stay.
Common Questions
Golden Monkey Trekking FAQ
How much does golden monkey trekking cost?
A golden monkey trekking permit costs USD 100 per person, set by the Rwanda Development Board, making it a popular lower-cost addition to a gorilla trekking trip.
Can I do golden monkey trekking and gorilla trekking on the same day?
It is possible but tiring, since both start with an early briefing. Most itineraries schedule them on separate days for a more comfortable pace.
