Volcanoes National Park
Five dormant volcanoes, mountain gorillas and golden monkeys in Rwanda's most famous protected landscape.
About the Park
Where the Virungas Meet Rwanda
Volcanoes National Park sits in Rwanda's northwest corner, part of the wider Virunga Massif that spans the borders with Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Five of the range's eight volcanoes rise within Rwanda's boundary (Karisimbi, Bisoke, Muhabura, Gahinga and Sabyinyo), their slopes covered in dense montane forest and bamboo that shelters roughly a third of the world's remaining mountain gorillas.
This is the park where Dian Fossey conducted her pioneering gorilla research from the 1960s through her death in 1985, and her former research camp, Karisoke, remains a site visitors can hike to. Beyond gorilla trekking, the park offers golden monkey trekking in its bamboo zone, a demanding day-hike up Mount Bisoke to its crater lake, and gentler walks through the Twin Lakes area at the park's base.
Our gorilla trekking guide covers permits and logistics in full; see also golden monkey trekking and our Bisoke hiking guide for other activities in the park.
Getting There
