Car rental in Rwanda, arranged around your trip

Renting a car in Rwanda is not only about getting from A to B. The roads are good on the main routes, but the best places are up steep hills, along gravel tracks or inside parks where the wrong vehicle costs you hours. This page is the starting point for every rental option we arrange, from a 4x4 with a driver-guide to a minibus for a family group.

We work as a proposal service. You tell us what you plan to do, and we suggest the vehicle and driver arrangement that suits it, then quote the trip in writing. Nothing is priced until we know your route and dates.

Our article on why a 4x4 makes sense in Rwanda explains this in more detail, and Land Cruiser vs RAV4 compares two popular choices.

With a driver or self-drive

Most visitors choose a driver. Rwanda's main roads are winding, busy with motorbikes and pedestrians, and often unfamiliar. A driver-guide removes the stress, knows the parks and can explain what you see. It also lets everyone in the vehicle look out of the window.

Self-drive works for confident travellers who have a valid licence and want freedom. It suits shorter routes, camping trips and repeat visitors. Read our page on car hire with a driver-guide, our self-drive Rwanda page and our article on self-drive vs driver to choose.

Our rental options

Each option has its own page.

You can see the vehicles on our fleet page.

How rates work

We do not publish a rate card. Rental cost depends on the vehicle, the number of days, the distance, the season and whether a driver is included. A fuel policy and any overnight allowance for the driver are set in the quote. Read our guide to car rental prices in Rwanda for the factors that move the price, and remember that fuel, park fees and tolls, where they apply, are shown as separate lines.

Requirements

Driving licence

If you self-drive, you need a valid licence. Requirements differ by country of issue, and an international driving permit may be advised. Our article on whether foreigners can drive in Rwanda explains the rule, but always confirm the current position with the authorities.

Age

Rental companies normally set a minimum age and sometimes a minimum length of driving experience. We confirm ours at the time of your quote.

Deposit and insurance

A security deposit is common for self-drive rentals, and the vehicle carries insurance with an excess. What the policy covers and what you pay in the event of damage are stated before you sign. See car rental insurance in Rwanda.

Pickup points

We can arrange pickup and drop-off at:

  • Kigali International Airport, on arrival or departure
  • Your hotel or guesthouse in Kigali
  • Our Kigali base, by arrangement
  • Musanze or another town, on request, for one-way trips

See renting a car at Kigali airport for a step-by-step guide.

Driving rules and road conditions

Rwanda drives on the right. Speed limits are enforced, often by cameras and police checks, and fines are real. Roads on the main routes are in good condition, but rain can make tracks slippery, and night driving is not advised because of pedestrians and cyclists. Read our guides to driving in Rwanda, traffic fines and fuel, distances and travel times.

Where people go by car

Rwanda is compact, and a car opens up a lot.

For routes and stops, read Rwanda's most scenic drives and the ultimate Rwanda road trip. If you plan to leave Rwanda, see driving from Rwanda to Uganda.

How to book

  1. Send us your dates, route, group size and licence status.
  2. We propose a vehicle and driver arrangement.
  3. You receive a written quote listing what is included.
  4. You confirm and pay the agreed deposit.
  5. We meet you at the agreed pickup point with the vehicle checked and ready.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I rent a car in Rwanda?

Yes, self-drive and with a driver. We arrange both on request, and quote each trip individually.

Is it better to have a driver?

For most visitors, yes. A driver-guide handles the roads and parks and lets you enjoy the view. Confident drivers can choose self-drive for simpler routes.

Do I need a 4x4?

For Akagera and rough roads, a 4x4 is the right choice. For Kigali and the main tarmac routes, a saloon or SUV is enough.

What is the cost of car rental in Rwanda?

It varies with the vehicle, the days, the distance and the season. We quote per trip, in writing, so you can compare.

Can I take the car to Uganda?

Cross-border trips need special paperwork and are arranged case by case. See our cross-border rental page.

Can you meet me at the airport?

Yes, we can arrange pickup at Kigali International Airport. See airport car rental.

What documents do I need?

A valid driving licence for self-drive, your passport and a deposit. We confirm the exact list when you enquire.
