Renting for weeks or months

Some visitors are not touring for a week. They are staying for a work posting, a research project, a volunteering placement or simply an extended stay in Kigali. A day rate does not make sense for this, so we arrange longer rentals with terms suited to the length of stay, generally from one month.

This page covers long-term arrangements. For shorter trips, see car rental in Rwanda and car rental in Kigali.

Who this suits

  • Expats and diplomatic staff settling in for a posting.
  • NGO and development workers based in Kigali for a project.
  • Business travellers on an extended assignment. See conference and business traveller tours for shorter business trips.
  • Anyone staying long enough that daily rates become impractical.

What we arrange

We can arrange the rental with or without a driver. A driver suits those who prefer not to navigate Kigali traffic daily, while self-drive gives full independence. See car hire with a driver-guide and self-drive Rwanda.

What is included and not included

Long-term quotes are itemised, covering the vehicle and insurance as agreed. Fuel and day-to-day running costs are normally the renter's responsibility. Routine maintenance and how breakdowns are handled should be clear before you sign. See car rental insurance in Rwanda.

Requirements

For self-drive you need a valid driving licence, and an international permit may be advised depending on where it was issued. Read can foreigners drive in Rwanda and confirm current requirements, since rules can differ for longer stays and local licence conversion.

Driving day to day

Kigali is orderly, but daily driving means adjusting to motorbike taxis, hill traffic and the monthly umuganda community work morning, when some roads are quieter. See driving in Rwanda and getting around Kigali.

Servicing during the rental

A vehicle on a long-term rental still needs routine servicing over the course of months, and we schedule this so it causes minimal disruption to your daily use, typically arranging a temporary replacement vehicle for the day if the service cannot be done overnight. Keeping to the servicing schedule also protects the vehicle's reliability, which matters more the longer you depend on it for daily transport.

Comparing long-term rental with owning a vehicle

For a posting of a year or less, renting usually works out simpler than importing or buying a vehicle, since it avoids registration, resale and the risk of being left with a car to dispose of when you leave. For longer postings, the calculation can shift, and we are happy to talk through the trade-offs honestly rather than push you toward the option that suits us, since a rental only makes sense for as long as it genuinely suits your situation.

Adding a driver to a long-term rental

Some long-term renters start with self-drive and later decide a driver suits their routine better, particularly once they experience Kigali's daily traffic and hill navigation firsthand. This switch is usually straightforward to arrange partway through a rental, subject to driver availability, and we are happy to revisit the arrangement at any point during your stay rather than only at the start.

Company and organisational rentals

Long-term rentals are not limited to individuals. Companies, NGOs and diplomatic missions often rent one or more vehicles for staff use over an extended period, sometimes with a shared pool of vehicles rather than one per person. If this describes your situation, tell us the number of staff, expected usage patterns and any procurement requirements your organisation has, and we structure the agreement accordingly.

Insurance and paperwork for residents

Long-term renters sometimes hold a local address, a work permit or a residency card rather than travelling on a short-stay visa, and this can affect which paperwork is asked for at the start of the rental. Bring whatever residency, employment or organisational documents you have, and we confirm exactly what is needed once we know the nature of your stay.

Extending or ending the rental

Postings and projects change timelines, so we build flexibility into long-term agreements where we can. If you need to extend beyond the original term, tell us as early as possible so we can confirm the vehicle remains available rather than being reassigned to another client. Equally, if your stay ends earlier than planned, we agree the notice period and any early-return terms at the start of the rental so there is no confusion later.

Occasional touring during a long-term rental

A long-term rental does not have to mean the vehicle only ever sees Kigali traffic. Many expats and long-stay visitors use weekends and holidays to explore further afield, whether that is a weekend in Musanze, a stay by Lake Kivu or a trip to Akagera. If your daily vehicle is not suited to rougher roads, we can arrange a temporary swap to a 4x4 for the weekend and switch back afterwards. See our weekend getaways from Kigali article for ideas suited to residents.

How to book

  1. Tell us the length of stay, intended use and whether you want a driver.
  2. We propose a vehicle and a monthly rate.
  3. You confirm terms and pay the agreed deposit.
  4. We deliver the vehicle and review terms together before you sign.

Frequently Asked Questions

This is typically around one month. Tell us your dates and we confirm.

Is it cheaper than renting by the day for a long stay?

Yes, monthly rates are structured for extended use rather than daily pricing.

Can I switch between self-drive and a driver during the rental?

Ask us. This can often be arranged, subject to availability.

Who pays for fuel and maintenance?

Fuel is normally the renter's responsibility. Maintenance terms are set out in your agreement.

This depends on how long you plan to stay. Confirm the current rule with us before committing to self-drive.
