Why trek gorillas in Bwindi from Kigali

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in southwestern Uganda holds close to half of the world's remaining mountain gorillas, and it is reachable overland from Kigali in under a day's drive. This trip is built for travellers based in Kigali, whether at the start or end of a Rwanda itinerary, who want the option of trekking in Bwindi rather than, or in addition to, Volcanoes National Park. Our comparison of Bwindi and Volcanoes is worth reading first if you are still deciding where to trek, and our guide to gorilla trekking in Bwindi from Kigali covers the route in more depth than this page.

If your priority is trekking inside Rwanda itself, see our gorilla trekking Rwanda page instead. If you want both parks on one trip, our Rwanda and Uganda gorilla safari and Rwanda and Uganda primate safari combine Bwindi with time in Rwanda.

Who this suits

This trip suits visitors comfortable with a border crossing and an early start, who want Bwindi's forest specifically, whether for its scenery, its larger gorilla population or simply because Rwanda's permits were unavailable for their dates. It is a compact, three-day structure, so it is not the trip to choose if you want to linger in Uganda beyond the trek itself. Families and older travellers manage it well with a porter, in the same way they would in Rwanda, though the extra day of driving is worth planning around rather than rushing.

Day by day

Day 1: Kigali to Bwindi via the border

Your driver-guide collects you in Kigali and drives west toward the Rwanda-Uganda border, most commonly at Cyanika or Katuna depending on your route. Crossing requires your passport and any visa arranged in advance. From the border, the drive continues into Uganda's southwest to your lodge near Bwindi, arriving with time to rest before trekking the next morning. Our guide to driving from Rwanda to Uganda covers the crossing points, paperwork and typical timing in detail.

Day 2: Gorilla trekking in Bwindi

After a briefing at the park headquarters, rangers assign you to a gorilla family and you set out with trackers into Bwindi's forest, which is steeper and denser in places than Volcanoes National Park. The walk can last anywhere from one to several hours before you reach the gorillas, and you spend a fixed period with them once found. Afternoon is free to rest at your lodge.

Day 3: Return to Kigali

You retrace the route back across the border to Kigali, arriving in the afternoon or evening depending on border traffic. If your flight home is the next day, this timing usually leaves enough of a buffer, though we recommend not booking a same-day departure.

What is included and what is not

This trip includes private transport for the full route, your driver-guide, and support with the border crossing paperwork. It does not include the Uganda gorilla permit fee, which is paid to the Uganda Wildlife Authority and priced separately from anything Rwanda-based operators control, nor does it include your visa fees, accommodation, or meals unless arranged in advance. Our East Africa tourist visa guide explains the visa options that can cover travel between Rwanda and Uganda on one trip.

Best season

Trekking runs all year in Bwindi, as it does in Rwanda. The two dry periods, June to September and December to February, offer firmer trails and are the busiest booking months for permits, so plan ahead if you are travelling then. The rainy months of March to May and October to November see fewer visitors and sometimes better rates, though the forest floor is wetter and more slippery.

What to pack

Pack as you would for gorilla trekking in Rwanda: waterproof hiking boots, long trousers and sleeves, a rain jacket, gardening gloves for gripping vegetation, and a hat and sunscreen for the drive. Our gorilla trekking packing list applies equally to Bwindi.

How to book

Tell us your dates and group size. We confirm the Uganda gorilla permit availability, plan the border crossing and visa requirements for your nationality, and arrange transport and lodging on both sides. Because Uganda permits and Rwanda permits are booked and paid separately, tell us early if you are undecided between the two parks.

Why choose Bwindi over Volcanoes National Park

Travellers ask us this often, and there is no single right answer. Bwindi holds a larger share of the world's mountain gorilla population and a denser, older forest, while Volcanoes National Park offers a shorter drive from Kigali and the option to combine trekking with a hike up Bisoke or a visit to Dian Fossey's tomb. Some visitors choose Bwindi simply because Rwanda's permits were unavailable for their dates, others because they want to see a second country on the same trip. Our comparison of Bwindi and Volcanoes National Park sets out the practical differences in trekking conditions, access and permit pricing so you can decide with the full picture in front of you.

A note on timing and flexibility

Because this trip depends on a fixed permit date and an international border crossing, build in a spare day either side if your schedule allows it. Border posts can be slower at peak travel times, and a delay on either side of the crossing has a knock-on effect on a tightly scheduled three-day trip. If you would prefer more buffer, ask us about a four-day version of this same route, which adds a rest day in Uganda or an extra night in Kigali either side of the crossing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a separate visa for Uganda?

This depends on your nationality and whether you hold, or are eligible for, the East Africa tourist visa, which can cover travel between Rwanda, Uganda and Kenya on one visa. Confirm your specific requirements with us before booking.

How long is the drive from Kigali to Bwindi?

The drive takes most of a day, including the border crossing, which adds time beyond the driving itself. We build this into Day 1 so you arrive with time to rest before trekking.

Is Bwindi trekking harder than Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park?

Bwindi's forest is generally steeper and denser in places, though difficulty on any given day depends more on where the gorilla family has moved than on the park itself.

Can I do this trip if I only have three days in the region?

Yes, this itinerary is built for exactly that: a compact round trip from Kigali with one trekking day in between. It leaves little room for delay, so build in flexibility around your flights.

Is the Uganda gorilla permit the same price as Rwanda's?

No, Uganda and Rwanda set their own permit prices independently through their respective wildlife authorities, and both can change. We confirm current figures for your dates before you commit.

Can this trip be combined with Nyungwe or Volcanoes National Park?

Yes. Our Rwanda and Uganda primate safari extends this idea into a longer trip covering gorillas and chimpanzees on both sides of the border.
