Lake Kivu Tours
Rwanda's answer to a lakeside holiday: islands, beach towns and a slower pace after the parks.
About Lake Kivu
One of Africa's Great Lakes
Lake Kivu stretches nearly 90 kilometres along Rwanda's border with the Democratic Republic of Congo, ranking among Africa's Great Lakes by both size and depth. Its shoreline is dotted with small towns and lodges: Gisenyi in the north, Kibuye in the middle, Rusizi in the south, each offering a different pace after the early mornings of gorilla trekking or a safari game drive.
The lake's many small islands, some inhabited, some not, make for a memorable half-day of kayaking or a boat excursion, while Kibuye in particular has developed a reputation for calm, scenic swimming spots (Lake Kivu is one of the few East African lakes considered safe for swimming, being largely free of bilharzia and crocodiles). Coffee tours are another highlight: the lake's volcanic soil and altitude produce some of Rwanda's best-regarded coffee, and several lakeside cooperatives welcome visitors for tastings and farm walks.
Most itineraries pair Lake Kivu with gorilla trekking via a scenic drive from Musanze, or with Nyungwe National Park from the lake's southern end. See our Lake Kivu travel guide for a deeper look at each town along the shore.
Choosing a Base
- Gisenyi (Rubavu). The liveliest town, closest to Volcanoes National Park, with a proper beach strip.
- Kibuye (Karongi). The most scenic stretch of shoreline, quieter, with excellent island access.
- Rusizi. The southern gateway, best paired with a Nyungwe extension.
