Why the Land Cruiser

Ask a safari guide across Africa what they trust, and the Toyota Land Cruiser comes up again and again. It is tall, strong and simple to repair. In Rwanda it earns its reputation on dirt tracks in Akagera, on climbing lanes towards the volcanoes and on the long road to Nyungwe.

For most visitors the appeal is practical. You sit high, so you see over roadside crops and tall grass. The cabin has room for bags, cameras and a cool box. Roof hatches, on the models that have them, let you stand and photograph wildlife in comfort. This page explains what to expect. For our wider range, see our main car rental in Rwanda page or the overview of 4x4 safari car rental.

What we arrange

We arrange Land Cruisers on request, with or without a driver-guide, for a day, a week or longer. Availability varies with the season, so early booking helps for July to September and the December holidays.

You can compare it with other vehicles on our fleet page. Our article on Land Cruiser vs RAV4 sets out when the smaller option is enough.

A day in a Land Cruiser

Here is a sample day for an Akagera trip with a driver-guide.

  • 05:30 Depart Kigali in the cool of the morning.
  • 08:00 Enter the park and begin a game drive with the roof hatch open where fitted.
  • Midday Picnic under an acacia or at a lake viewpoint.
  • Afternoon Loop through the northern or southern plains, then drive back to Kigali.

See our Akagera safari and Akagera day trip from Kigali pages. For planning, read our Akagera self-drive guide.

Driver-guide or self-drive

With a driver-guide you can watch the animals instead of the road, and the driver reads the terrain and the weather. See car hire with a driver-guide. If you prefer to drive, our self-drive Rwanda page explains the requirements. Our article on self-drive vs car hire with a driver is a useful comparison.

Camping option

If you want to sleep out, some Land Cruisers can carry a rooftop tent. See 4x4 with rooftop tent and the guide to camping in Rwanda with a rooftop tent.

What is included and not included

Each quote spells this out. Typically the quote covers the vehicle and insurance as set out in your rental agreement, plus a driver if you request one. Fuel, park entry fees, lodging and meals are usually extra unless agreed otherwise. See our guides to car rental prices in Rwanda and car rental insurance in Rwanda.

Best season

The dry months bring firm tracks and the best game viewing in Akagera. In the March to May rains the Land Cruiser's grip matters most. Landslides and mud can slow the drive, so allow extra time. See driving in Rwanda for road conditions and rules.

Roof hatches and game viewing

Not every Land Cruiser we arrange has roof hatches fitted, and this is one of the first things worth asking about if photography or game viewing is a priority for your trip. A vehicle with hatches lets you stand safely above the roofline once inside Akagera, which changes what you can see and photograph compared with looking through a side window. If a specific vehicle configuration matters to your trip, mention it when you enquire and we confirm what is available for your dates.

Space for equipment

Photographers, birders and anyone travelling with specialist gear often find the Land Cruiser's cargo space useful beyond simple luggage. Tripods, long lenses, spotting scopes and rain covers all take up room that a smaller SUV struggles to spare once passenger seats are filled. If your trip is built around a particular activity such as birding or photography, tell us so we can suggest a configuration with enough room for both people and equipment.

Fuel and running costs

A Land Cruiser is heavier and thirstier than a saloon or a small SUV, and this shows in the fuel bill on a long touring itinerary. Most clients accept this trade-off for the comfort and capability it brings on rough sections, and we are upfront about the difference when we quote. If your route stays mostly on tarmac, ask us whether a lighter vehicle would serve you just as well and save on fuel.

Combining a Land Cruiser with a full itinerary

Many of our clients do not hire a Land Cruiser on its own. They build it into a wider tour, such as our 7-day Rwanda tour or 10-day Rwanda tour, where the same vehicle and driver-guide carry you from the airport through Akagera, the volcanoes and on to Lake Kivu or Nyungwe. Booking this way often works out simpler than arranging separate transport for each leg, since your bags stay in one vehicle and your driver already knows the plan for the following day.

If your interest is specifically gorilla trekking, read our gorilla trekking Rwanda page, since the trailhead approach roads are one of the main reasons visitors choose this vehicle class in the first place.
