Driving across the border
Rwanda sits close enough to southwestern Uganda that a single road trip can cover gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, tree climbing lions in Ishasha or the plains of Queen Elizabeth National Park, all from a Kigali start. Crossing by road with a driver-guide and a suitable 4x4 removes the complexity of separate rentals or flights on each side.
This page covers the cross-border arrangement. For our wider fleet, see car rental in Rwanda and 4x4 safari car rental.
What crossing the border involves
Cross-border rental needs paperwork beyond a normal domestic rental, since the vehicle, insurance and sometimes the driver need clearance to operate in both countries. We arrange this in advance so it is settled before you travel, not negotiated at the border post.

Typical routes
| Destination | Approx. drive from Kigali |
|---|---|
| Bwindi Impenetrable National Park | Around 4 to 5 hours plus border time |
| Queen Elizabeth National Park | A longer add-on beyond Bwindi |
| Lake Bunyonyi | A short stop near the Bwindi road |
See our 3-day Bwindi gorilla trekking from Kigali and Rwanda and Uganda gorilla safari pages for full itineraries built around this drive. Our Rwanda and Uganda primate safari covers a combined chimpanzee and gorilla trip.
Why go with a driver-guide
For a cross-border trip we recommend a driver-guide rather than self-drive. Border procedures, unfamiliar Ugandan road rules and the mountain roads around Bwindi are easier with someone who does this regularly. See car hire with a driver-guide.
Vehicle choice
A 4x4 is standard for this route, since roads around Bwindi and the parks are unpaved in places. See 4x4 safari car rental and Toyota Land Cruiser hire for the vehicle options, or browse our fleet.
What is included and not included
Quotes are itemised and typically cover the vehicle, driver and domestic insurance. Cross-border fees, Ugandan park fees, gorilla permits and any additional cross-border insurance are usually quoted separately, since these depend on your exact plan.
Comparing this with flying
Some travellers prefer to fly to Uganda and rent locally. Driving keeps you with the same vehicle and driver throughout and lets you see the countryside in between, at the cost of longer travel time. Our article on Kigali vs Entebbe airport compares the alternative of flying into Uganda directly.
Vehicle condition for the Ugandan side
Roads around Bwindi and in parts of Queen Elizabeth National Park are rougher than Rwanda's main highways, with steep, sometimes muddy sections near the trailheads. The 4x4 we arrange for this route is chosen with that terrain in mind, and your driver-guide is experienced with the specific conditions on both sides of the border, not only the Rwandan roads.
Extending into a wider East Africa loop
Some travellers use the Rwanda to Uganda drive as the start of a longer East Africa route rather than a single there-and-back trip, continuing on to Queen Elizabeth National Park, Kibale for chimpanzee trekking or further afield. If this is your plan, tell us the full route so we can confirm which legs suit road travel and where switching to a flight within Uganda makes more sense for time or comfort. Our Rwanda and Tanzania and Kenya combo safaris page covers a different regional combination if your interest extends beyond Uganda.
Planning gorilla permits on both sides
If your trip includes gorilla trekking in both Rwanda and Uganda, permits for each country are booked separately and well ahead of your travel dates, since availability is limited on both sides of the border. We coordinate the driving schedule around your confirmed permit dates rather than the other way round, since permit availability is usually the harder constraint to work around. See gorilla trekking permit Rwanda for the Rwandan side of this planning.
What to expect at the border post
Border crossings between Rwanda and Uganda involve an exit process on the Rwandan side and an entry process on the Ugandan side, each with its own queue and paperwork. Having a driver-guide who crosses this route regularly helps, since they know which documents are asked for and roughly how busy a given crossing tends to be at different times of day. Keep your passport, visa and any vehicle paperwork accessible rather than packed away, since you will need to present them at both sides of the crossing.
Currency and connectivity across the border
Ugandan shillings are the local currency once you cross, and Rwandan francs are not generally accepted on the Ugandan side. Your Rwandan SIM card will usually lose signal near the border, so consider a Ugandan SIM if you need connectivity for the Bwindi or Queen Elizabeth portion of the trip. Your driver-guide can advise on where to change money or find a SIM vendor close to the crossing.

- You confirm and pay the deposit, and we prepare the cross-border paperwork.
- Your driver-guide collects you in Kigali and manages the whole route.
