Day Trips From Kigali
You don't need to leave the capital region to fill a memorable day. Here's where to go without repacking a bag.
Where to Go
Five Easy Day Trips
- King's Palace Museum, Nyanza. About 2 hours south, combined easily with an Intore dance performance.
- Lake Muhazi. A short drive east, popular for a relaxed lakeside lunch and boat ride.
- Nyandungu Eco-Park. A restored urban wetland minutes from central Kigali, good for an easy morning walk.
- Coffee farm visits. Several cooperatives near Kigali offer tours and tastings within an hour's drive.
- Ntarama and Nyamata Genocide Memorials. Sobering, essential sites about an hour south of the city.
Any of these pair well with a morning or afternoon in the city itself. See our full Kigali tours guide for combining them.
Common Questions
Day Trip FAQ
Can I combine more than one of these in a single day?
The King's Palace and Ntarama/Nyamata memorials are both roughly an hour south, so some travellers combine a memorial visit with the palace on the same day. Lake Muhazi and coffee farm visits are usually done as their own half-day or full-day outing given the different direction of travel.
Do I need a full day, or can these be done in half a day?
Nyandungu Eco-Park and a coffee farm visit both work well as half-day outings, easily paired with a morning or afternoon of Kigali city sightseeing. The King's Palace and Lake Muhazi are better suited to a full day once travel time is factored in.
Is transport included, or do I need to arrange my own?
All of our day trips include a private vehicle and driver-guide, so there's no need to arrange separate transport or navigate rental logistics for a single day out.
