2-Day Akagera Safari
Enough time for a real chance at the Big Five, without stretching your itinerary too thin.
Day-by-Day
Itinerary
1Transfer & Evening Game DriveKigali → Akagera
Drive to Akagera (2.5 hours), arriving in time for a sunset game drive tracking elephant, buffalo and giraffe as the light turns golden. Akagera's savannah and lake-studded landscape looks quite different from Rwanda's volcanic highlands further north, and late afternoon is often when animals are most active near the park's watering holes. Settle into your lodge for the night with the day's sightings fresh in mind.
2Sunrise Drive, Boat Safari & DepartureAkagera → Kigali
Early sunrise game drive for the best predator activity (lion and leopard sightings tend to be more likely in the cooler morning hours), followed by a Lake Ihema boat safari for hippo, crocodile and some of the park's most prolific birdlife. Return to Kigali in the afternoon, arriving with enough daylight left for onward travel plans or a relaxed evening in the city.

Common Questions
2-Day Akagera Safari FAQ
Is 2 days enough time to see Akagera's Big Five?
Two days gives you a solid chance at four of the Big Five (lion, buffalo, elephant and leopard), though rhino sightings are less predictable given the park's size. For better odds across all five, our 3-day Akagera safari adds a full extra day of game drives.
What's the best time of day to see wildlife in Akagera?
Early morning and late afternoon, when temperatures are cooler and animals are more active. That's why this itinerary is built around a sunset drive on arrival and a sunrise drive the next morning.
