Day-by-Day

Itinerary

1Transfer & Evening Game DriveKigali → Akagera

Drive to Akagera (2.5 hours), settle into your lodge and head out for a sunset game drive. This first outing is a chance to get oriented with the park's mix of savannah, woodland and lake habitats before the fuller days of game viewing ahead.

2Full Day of Game DrivesAkagera

Sunrise game drive followed by an afternoon drive, covering more of the park's terrain and habitat types for a fuller wildlife picture. Splitting the day this way (rather than one long continuous drive) matches when animals are naturally most active and gives two separate chances at Big Five sightings, including areas where Akagera's reintroduced rhino population tends to range.

3Boat Safari & DepartureAkagera → Kigali

Morning boat safari on Lake Ihema for hippo, crocodile and some of the park's most prolific birdlife, then return to Kigali in the early afternoon with time to spare before onward travel.

Common Questions

3-Day Akagera Safari FAQ

Why choose 3 days over the 2-day Akagera safari?

The extra day roughly doubles your game-drive time, which meaningfully improves your odds of a complete Big Five sighting, particularly rhino, which are less predictable than lion, elephant, buffalo and leopard.

Can this itinerary be combined with gorilla trekking or Lake Kivu?

Yes, Akagera pairs well with either as part of a longer Rwanda trip. See our 7-day Rwanda tour for a combined itinerary that includes gorilla trekking alongside this Akagera safari.
