Rwanda Travel FAQ

Straight answers to the questions we're asked most, from visas to permits to what to pack.

Do I need a visa to visit Rwanda?

Most nationalities can obtain a visa on arrival or apply online in advance through the Irembo portal. East African Community citizens do not need a visa. We confirm your specific requirement when we plan your trip.

How much does a gorilla trekking permit cost?

A gorilla trekking permit in Rwanda costs USD 1,500 per person as of this writing. Golden monkey permits cost USD 100. Prices are set by the Rwanda Development Board and can change, so we always confirm current rates when planning your trip. See our full cost breakdown.

What is the best time to visit Rwanda?

The two dry seasons, June to September and December to February, offer the easiest trekking conditions and the clearest roads. The wetter months are quieter and greener, with lower lodge rates, and gorilla trekking remains possible year-round.

Is Rwanda safe for solo travellers?

Yes. Rwanda is regularly cited as one of the safest countries in Africa for solo and first-time travellers, with low crime rates and an orderly, well-policed capital. See our why visit Rwanda page for more.

What currency is used in Rwanda and can I pay in US dollars?

The Rwandan franc (RWF) is the local currency. US dollars are widely accepted for permits, lodges and larger purchases, though small vendors and markets expect francs. Notes older than 2006 or with tears are often refused.

Do I need vaccinations to visit Rwanda?

A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required if arriving from a country with risk of yellow fever transmission. We recommend consulting a travel health clinic 4-6 weeks before departure for personalised advice, including on malaria prevention.

How fit do I need to be for gorilla trekking?

Moderate fitness is enough for most treks, which range from 30 minutes to several hours on uneven volcanic terrain at altitude. Porters are available to carry bags and assist with the climb. See our packing guide for full preparation details.

Can I combine Rwanda with Uganda or Tanzania?

Yes. We regularly design combined itineraries with gorilla trekking in Uganda's Bwindi Forest or a safari extension into the Serengeti, coordinating border logistics and permits for you.

What should I pack for a Rwanda trip?

Layered clothing works best given the altitude range: light clothes for Kigali and Akagera, warmer waterproof layers for gorilla trekking in the highlands. Neutral colours are preferred for wildlife viewing.
