Choosing where to stay in Akagera

Where you sleep decides how your Akagera trip feels. A lodge inside the park lets you be on the track at sunrise without a long drive. A lodge outside the gate is often cheaper but costs you time each morning. The park's main lodges also sit in different areas, and the distance between them is real, because tracks are slow.

This page is a neutral guide to the main choices. If you would like us to arrange a stay as part of a trip, see our Akagera safari page, and read our Akagera National Park guide for the wider picture.

Ruzizi Tented Lodge

Ruzizi sits by the water in the eastern part of the park, close to Lake Ihema. Guests sleep in tented rooms and can hear hippos at night, which is part of the appeal. The setting is quiet and well placed for boat trips. It suits visitors who want an atmospheric stay without paying for the top end of the market.

Ruzizi appears on many first-time itineraries, and searches for it are common. Read our comparison of Magashi, Ruzizi and Akagera Game Lodge for more detail on how they differ.

Akagera Game Lodge

Akagera Game Lodge is a traditional lodge with a swimming pool and a view over the landscape. It is close to the southern side of the park, so it is easy to reach from Kigali and convenient for a short stay. It suits families, groups and travellers who value comfort and facilities.

Magashi Camp

Magashi lies in the north of the park, in an area known for its wildlife and quieter tracks. It is a small, high-end camp, with a higher cost than the others. Because it is far from the southern gate, it needs more time to reach, and it works best for those who plan two or three nights in the park.

Campsites and simpler stays

The park has campsites for visitors who bring their own equipment. They are the lowest-cost choice and put you close to the bush, but you are responsible for food, water and cooking. Some travellers combine a campsite with a vehicle and rooftop tent. Our rooftop tent car rental page describes that option, and our article on camping in Rwanda with a rooftop tent explains how it works.

Staying outside the park

Several guesthouses and lodges sit near the park's gates and along the road from Kigali. They cost less and offer more choice, but you drive in each morning, which reduces your time in the park. This option works for a shorter visit or a tighter budget.

If you have only one day, you do not need a lodge at all. Our Akagera day trip from Kigali covers that version.

How location affects your safari

Akagera is a large park, and its areas differ.

  • The south has good tarmac access and is the easiest area to reach from Kigali.
  • The central and eastern lakes are the best places for hippos, crocodiles and birds.
  • The north is wilder, quieter and further from the gate, with different landscapes and fewer vehicles.

Where you sleep determines which part you see most. Sleeping in the north gives you early access to the quiet tracks, while sleeping near Lake Ihema puts you close to the boat landing. See our guide to Lake Ihema boat safari.

When to book

Lodges in the park are small, and the best ones fill quickly in June to September and around Christmas and New Year. Book several months ahead for those periods. In the wetter months there is usually more availability and lower rates. Read our note on the best time to visit Akagera to plan your dates.

What lodge prices depend on

We do not print nightly rates, because they change by season and by the lodge's own policy. Rates depend on the room type, whether meals and activities are included, and the number of people sharing. Ask for a written quote that lists what is included. Park entry is normally separate from the lodge, so read our guide to Akagera National Park fees as well.

How we help

We can recommend a lodge for your budget, check availability and include it in your safari quote. We also arrange transfers from Kigali and a driver-guide. If you are building a longer Rwanda trip, our Rwanda safari page shows how Akagera fits with the gorilla parks, and our hotel and lodge booking service covers stays elsewhere.
