Landing in Kigali

Kigali International Airport sits about 10 kilometres from the city centre, a drive of 20 to 30 minutes depending on traffic. After a long flight, the last thing you want is to negotiate a fare at the taxi rank or wait to see if anyone is holding a sign with your name. We arrange the transfer before you leave home, so a driver is waiting at arrivals with your name visible, ready to take you straight to your hotel, or on to Musanze, Akagera or wherever your itinerary starts.

This page covers the transfer itself. If you are arranging a full trip around it, our Kigali tours page is a useful starting point, and our Kigali Airport Arrival Guide covers SIM cards, money and what to expect in the terminal.

How the transfer works

  1. You send us your flight number and arrival time, ideally when you book your trip.
  2. We track the flight, so a delay does not leave you waiting or the driver missing you.
  3. The driver meets you inside or just outside arrivals, holding a sign with your name.
  4. You are driven directly to your hotel, or to the first stop on your itinerary.

The same process works in reverse for your departure transfer. We build in enough time for check-in and security, based on typical waits at the airport rather than a fixed guess.

Tip

Share your flight number rather than just a time. Flights into Kigali sometimes arrive early or late, and tracking the number lets us adjust the pickup without you needing to call anyone.

Vehicles and group size

A transfer for a couple with two suitcases needs a different vehicle from a family of six with safari bags and camera equipment. We match the vehicle to your group, from a saloon car for a light solo traveller to an SUV or 4x4 for larger groups or onward safari travel. See our fleet for the vehicle classes we work with.

Combining the transfer with your first day

Many visitors land in the morning and want to make use of the day rather than resting at the hotel. If your flight timing allows it, we can route the transfer through a short stop, such as Nyamirambo or a coffee shop, before dropping you at your hotel. Business travellers arriving for a conference often go straight to the venue. See our conference and business traveller tours if that describes your trip.

If you would rather have one driver for your whole stay rather than a single transfer, our private guide hire page explains how that works, and it usually includes the airport legs at both ends.

Night and early flights

Rwanda's main international flights often arrive late at night or leave in the early hours. We meet every flight regardless of the time, and the driver waits at arrivals in case of delay rather than circling the car park. For departures before dawn, we agree the pickup time with your hotel the evening before, so nothing depends on a wake-up call going through correctly.

What is included

A transfer covers the driver, vehicle and fuel for the agreed route, generally airport to your first accommodation, or the return leg at the end of your trip. It does not include tolls or parking fees that may apply on the day, meals, or any stop beyond the agreed route. We confirm the exact route and any extra stops in writing before you travel.

Booking ahead

Book your transfer alongside the rest of your trip, ideally as soon as your flights are confirmed. If your plans change, a new arrival time or an added stop is easy to adjust as long as you tell us before the day. Read our Kigali airport transfer guide for more detail on the airport itself, and our Getting Around Kigali article if you plan to use taxis or motos on other days of your trip.

Arriving for a tour versus arriving for business

The purpose of your trip shapes how we plan the pickup. A traveller starting a multi-day safari the next morning usually just needs a smooth ride to a hotel and an early night. A business traveller heading to a conference the same afternoon may need the transfer timed tightly around a session start, with luggage handled quickly so there is no delay reaching the venue. Tell us which applies and we plan the pickup accordingly, including any short stop for a change of clothes or a coffee if your schedule allows it.

Multiple pickups in one group

Larger groups sometimes arrive on different flights over the course of a day, particularly families or delegations travelling from different cities. Rather than booking each pickup separately, tell us the full list of arrivals and we plan them as one coordinated schedule, so vehicles are used efficiently and no one waits longer than necessary at the airport.

Comparing an airport transfer with self-drive

If you are considering renting a vehicle yourself rather than booking a transfer, arriving after a long flight is generally not the best time to start driving on unfamiliar roads. Most visitors choose a transfer for the arrival leg even if they plan to self-drive for the rest of the trip. See our self-drive Rwanda page if that is part of your plan, and our article on driving in Rwanda for what to expect once you do take the wheel.

What drivers are briefed on

Drivers handling airport transfers are briefed on your flight details, any special requirements such as extra luggage space or a child seat, and the exact drop-off address. If your accommodation is difficult to find or has a specific arrival procedure, such as a gate code or a call ahead, tell us in advance so this is passed on and nothing holds up your arrival.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you meet every flight into Kigali?

Yes. Tell us your flight number and we track it, so the driver adjusts to any delay without you needing to contact anyone on arrival.

What vehicle will I be picked up in?

It depends on your group size and luggage. A saloon suits one or two people with light bags, while an SUV or 4x4 suits families or safari-bound groups. We confirm the vehicle in advance.

How much does an airport transfer cost?

Price depends on the vehicle and distance, and we quote it in writing before you travel. Ask us for a figure once you share your dates and group size.

Can you also arrange my return transfer?

Yes. We can book both legs together, or add the return transfer later if your departure date is not yet fixed.

What if my flight is delayed?

The driver tracks your flight and waits at arrivals, so a delay does not affect your pickup.

Can the transfer include a stop on the way to my hotel?

Often, yes, depending on timing. Tell us what you would like to see and we suggest whether it fits before your first night.
