Birding
10 guides from our Kigali-based team.
Rwanda is small, but its birdlife is not. The country sits on the Albertine Rift, a region with a high number of species found nowhere else, and it combines rainforest, savanna, wetland and highland habitats within a few hours of each other. That makes it unusually efficient for birders, who can build a strong list without long transfers.
The guides in this section explain where to go and when, what equipment helps, and how to hire a guide who knows the calls. They cover Nyungwe for forest species, Akagera for waterbirds and savanna birds, and the wetlands around Kigali for an easy first outing. We keep the advice practical: which trails are worth the early start, which lodges are good at dawn, and how to combine birding with other activities.
If you are already visiting for gorillas, adding a day of birding is easy. Our Kigali wetland birding tour is a short introduction, and the wider Nyungwe National Park guide explains the forest species you are most likely to meet.
You do not need to be an expert to enjoy the guides in this section. They explain how a guide helps you find birds, what to bring, and how to plan around the best hours of the day. Serious birders will find suggested routes and target species, while casual visitors will find short outings that add colour to a wider trip.
