Gorilla & Primates

51 guides from our Kigali-based team.

Rwanda is the most straightforward country in East Africa for meeting mountain gorillas. Volcanoes National Park sits roughly two and a half hours from Kigali, treks start early in the morning, and most visitors are back at their lodge by early afternoon. That simplicity hides a lot of detail, and the articles in this section cover it: how permits are issued, how fit you need to be, what happens during the hour with the group, and how to choose between gorillas, golden monkeys and chimpanzees.

Every guide here comes from people who walk these trails and watch the same families season after season. If you are new to the subject, start with our overview of gorilla trekking in Rwanda and then read the permit and fitness guides. If you already have a permit and want to plan around it, the primate safari itineraries show how trekking fits with Nyungwe, Akagera and Lake Kivu.

Permit prices and rules are set by the Rwanda Development Board and change from time to time, so the guides explain how to check current terms rather than repeating numbers that go stale. For a wider view of primates beyond gorillas, see our pages on chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe and the gorilla permit process.

A sensible reading order is the overview, then fitness, then packing, then permits. If you have extra days, add golden monkeys or chimpanzees, which are quieter and cheaper experiences that suit a rest day between longer treks. Each guide ends with the questions worth putting to your operator before you pay a deposit.
