Overview
A long layover in Kigali is a real opportunity. The city is compact, clean and safe, and much of it can be seen in a few hours with a driver-guide. This tour is designed for travellers who have half a day and want to see the essentials without stress.
We build the tour around your flight. We collect you at the airport or hotel, show you the main sights, and return you in time to check in. For a longer look at the city, see our page on Kigali tours and our guide to Kigali in two days.
Is there time? A quick guide
| Layover | What is realistic |
|---|---|
| Under 5 hours | Airport area only; not recommended to leave |
| 5 to 7 hours | A short city drive and one main stop |
| 7 to 10 hours | A full half-day tour with a memorial visit |
| Overnight | A half day plus a relaxed evening |
Rwanda is strict about immigration timing, and traffic can slow you. We plan a comfortable buffer. Read our Kigali airport arrival guide for details on immigration and money. <!-- VERIFY: visa on arrival and transit rules for layover passengers, which vary by nationality -->
A typical half day, hour by hour
- Meet your guide at arrivals, with a name board, and load your bags into the vehicle. We can arrange luggage storage. <!-- CLIENT TO CONFIRM: luggage storage arrangement -->
- Drive into the city, passing the Convention Centre and its distinctive dome. See our guide to the Kigali Convention Centre.
- Visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial, if you wish, for a sober and important introduction to Rwanda. See our note on visiting the memorial.
- A stop at a local market or craft centre. See Kimironko Market.
- Coffee or lunch at a local place. See best coffee shops in Kigali.
- A viewpoint over the hills, then a drive back to the airport or your hotel.
We adjust every stop to your interests. Some guests prefer art galleries, others a walk in a neighbourhood. See Kigali art galleries and the Nyamirambo neighbourhood guide.
The memorial visit
The Kigali Genocide Memorial commemorates the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, in which more than a million people were killed in about a hundred days. It is a place of remembrance and burial, and it deserves unhurried time and quiet. If your layover is short, we may suggest it as the single main stop. Read our page on the Kigali history tour for a deeper visit.
What to bring
- Passport and boarding pass, kept in an easy-to-reach bag
- Comfortable shoes and a light layer
- Some Rwandan francs for small purchases. See money in Rwanda.
- A reusable cloth bag, since plastic bags are banned
Other options for the time you have
If you have a full day rather than half, our day trips from Kigali show what else is within reach. For food lovers, our Kigali food tour is a taste of the city. Business travellers should look at our conference and business traveller tours.
Airport pick-up
Book a Kigali airport transfer with us and the tour begins at arrivals. If you are on a layover, tell us your flight numbers and we will monitor delays.
What is included, and what is not
Our quote covers a private vehicle, driver-guide and fuel for the tour. Entry fees, meals and drinks are itemised where applicable. Visas, flights, insurance, tips and personal purchases are not included.
Booking
Send us your arrival and departure times as early as you can. We confirm that the tour fits and give you a fixed plan.
Sample routes
We choose the route with you. Three common versions are below.
- History and city: the memorial, the Convention Centre and a viewpoint.
- Local life: a market, a coffee stop and a walk in a neighbourhood.
- Art and craft: a gallery, a craft centre and a souvenir stop. See what to buy in Rwanda.
Getting around Kigali
Kigali is easy to move around in, and we take care of the traffic and timing. If you want to explore alone afterwards, read our guide to getting around Kigali. For a longer stay, see where to stay in Kigali and our Rwanda travel FAQ.
Business travellers
If you are in Kigali for a meeting or conference and have a free afternoon, the tour can be shortened or moved to suit. We can also arrange delegate transfers. See our business travel guide.
Why go with a private guide
On a short layover, every hour counts. A private guide knows which roads are busy, which stops are worth your time and how long each takes. There is no group waiting for latecomers, and no risk that a shared schedule makes you miss your flight. Read our note on private and group tours.
Weather and clothing
Kigali sits at altitude and is mild for most of the year. Mornings can be cool, and rain is possible in the wetter months. A light layer and comfortable shoes are enough.
Money and connectivity
Cards are accepted in many Kigali venues, but small purchases are easier with cash. Our guide will help you find an exchange point or ATM. A local SIM card is quick to buy at the airport. See Rwanda SIM card and internet guide.
